Carr Care FAQs: How Should I Prepare my Vehicle for Winter?

Answers to your Chevrolet Service Questions

Here in the Pacific Northwest, we're fortunate to experience relatively mild winters without tremendous snowfall levels experienced by so many of our friends to the east. That said, it's still a good idea to get your car ready for winter - so when a brutal cold snap hits, or we do get some heavy snowfall, your vehicle can handle it. The most important items to check are your tires, battery and fluids. If you need help checking any of these things, or if you simply have questions about how to properly winterize your Chevy, consult with a factory-trained maintenance pro at your nearest authorized Chevrolet dealership.

How Can I Properly Winterize My Chevrolet?

First things first, we have to talk safety. That means talking tires. After all, they're the only parts of your vehicle that actually make contact with the road surface - so they're extremely important. Poorly-inflated tires lose grip, especially in snowy or icy conditions. Be sure to keep a close eye on the tire pressure: Tires without leaks can still lose a great deal of pressure when the temperature drops. It's also a good idea to check your tire tread depth. If your tires are heavily worn, consider getting them replaced. Portland-area drivers may not need snow tires, but if you often drive on unpaved roads or simply plan to travel to snowier climbs, studless snow tires may be a smart investment.

You should also check your wiper blades for damage, and replace them as necessary. Your wiper fluid level should also be checked. Make sure the wiper fluid you use is freeze-resistant - otherwise it could freeze on contact with your windshield on a bitterly-cold night, obscuring your vision.

Finally, be sure to have the starting components of your vehicle checked out. These include the battery, alternator and the starter itself. As temperatures fall, so does the power output of your vehicle's battery - and the cold temperatures mean your engine needs even more power to start up! In extremely cold climates, cars may even need to be equipped with special cold-weather starting accessories! Here in Portland, as long as your battery has a strong charge, you're one step closer to being ready for anything mother nature can throw at you.
