What Does the Water Pump in a Car Do?

It's called a water pump even though it's never a good idea to run just water in your engine's cooling system. Instead, you should always have the right mixture of water and factory-approved antifreeze coolant. Once the system is filled, the water pump will begin circulating the coolant around the engine. Once the coolant is hot enough, a thermostat valve opens to allow the hot coolant into the radiator, and the cooler coolant that's in the radiator will be pumped into the engine.

How Can You Tell if Your Vehicle's Water Pump is Bad?

Perhaps the most significant sign of a bad water pump is an overheating engine. Today, most engines at least have aluminum heads, and often aluminum engine blocks. This means any extra heat is likely to warp the metal and render the engine useless. Another sign of a bad water pump is a leak coming from the front of the engine and behind the radiator.

We've mentioned it above, but it's worth repeating; This is why you should never drive your vehicle when it's running too hot. If the temperature warning light comes on or the temperature gauge is heading into the red, safely pull over and arrange for a tow.

Even if you let the engine cool down to a safe level, it won't take more than a few blocks to heat back up to dangerous levels. It'll be quicker and easier to simply have the vehicle towed to our service center. If you need help making arrangements to get it here, give us a call.
